Anna Clark lost her father early and lived with her widowed mother under her uncle's roof. On her wedding day, to keep the peace in the family, she swapped grooms with her cousin — and married into the struggling Harris family instead. But appearances were deceiving: on the surface they were poor farmers, but in truth, the Harris family was quietly wealthy. After the wedding, her new husband and mother-in-law treated her with genuine warmth, and she found herself living a life of comfort and love. When she returned to Clark Manor with cartloads of treasure, she was met with hostility — but she firmly insisted on taking her mother back with her to her real home.
