Evelyn, the daughter of an Eastern gangster, attends college under an assumed name and makes a pact with her childhood friends Dylan and Owen to choose one of them to marry at a masquerade ball. Gina, the daughter of a nanny, impersonates a wealthy heiress to sow discord. Dylan and Owen are blinded by her fragile facade, repeatedly taking her side—forcing Evelyn, who has a severe seafood allergy, to eat shrimp to prove her identity, and allowing Gina to smash the music box, a memento from Evelyn’s mother. This breaks Evelyn’s heart completely.
At the masquerade ball, Evelyn publicly rejected both Dylan and Owen, choosing instead her originally intended husband, Sylvan, a powerful gangster from the West. Unwilling to accept this, Gina spread rumors on campus that Evelyn was Sylvan’s mistress. However, at the grand wedding, her false identity as a “rich heiress” was exposed in front of everyone. Upon learning the full truth, Dylan and Owen were filled with remorse and embarked on a frantic quest for redemption—kneeling in the rain and shielding Evelyn from a flying bottle.
Driven mad by jealousy, Gina devised a plan to knock Evelyn unconscious, tie her up, and take her deep into the mountains to feed her to the wolves. At the critical moment, Sylvan arrived, drove off the wolves, and rescued Evelyn. Gina was thrown back into the mountains by Sylvan but was fortunately rescued by Sylvan’s arch-enemy, Viktor. Viktor and Gina conspired to carry out a kidnapping, intending to force Sylvan to hand over the West City Dock. At the scene of the kidnapping, Gina turned on Viktor and shot him, intending to take Evelyn down with her, only to discover the gun was loaded with blanks—it turned out everything had been part of Sylvan’s plan all along. Gina was subdued by Dylan and Owen, who arrived shortly afterward, and ultimately jumped to her death. Once everything had settled, Dylan and Owen traveled abroad to atone for their sins. Evelyn and Sylvan’s bond grew stronger over time; she became pregnant, and they found true happiness.
