Ava was raised by the Linden family and grew up with her cousin Ethan Linden. Upon reaching womanhood, she learned she was the orphaned daughter of General Hawthorne. The Emperor wished to take her as a consort, but she loved Ethan deeply — until she discovered that he had secretly become betrothed to Serena Loren for power, and mocked her birth. Heartbroken, Ava agreed to enter the palace. At the gift-giving ceremony, her family humiliated her — but the Emperor stepped in and revealed her true identity. Once inside the palace, the Emperor favored her alone, because of a childhood bond. The Empress and Serena joined forces against her — fabricating an affair, spreading rumors about the royal heir, and even slipping her a Western abortion drug.
