Joanna Chilton, raised with the most traditional and orthodox upbringing of noble women, only discovered after marrying Ernest Jephson that he had a powerful concubine and ambiguous relations with his widowed sister-in-law. He despised the rigid and dull nature often associated with noblewomen. Faced with the endless strife in the Duke's mansion, provocations from the concubine, and the sister-in-law's covert instigations, Joanna deftly managed each situation. Having married into the family as the principle wife, it was her role to handle the Duke's messes. Once her position is solidified and she has heirs, the next mess to be dealt with will be the Duke himself!
