Series details As Marcus set the carry‑cot down on the kitchen dining table, Naomi had just deleted all their couple photos from her phone. Inside the basket lay a newborn baby with dark curly hair and a small birthmark behind his left ear — exactly the same as her husband’s. Marcus claimed it was a sperm‑donation arrangement: Soleil could not conceive naturally, and he had merely done her a favor. Staring at the infant, Naomi thought of her own two‑year journey with IVF and three miscarriages. Each time, she had cried alone in the bathroom, unwilling for him to see her tears.
She sent the baby away, and Soleil moved into their home. Glancing at Soleil’s phone screen, Naomi caught sight of a message: “She’s going to leave. This will all be over soon.” It finally dawned on her that this was never a misunderstanding, but a meticulously plotted ousting. She turned to her lawyer Helen and began going through financial records. Over the past year, Marcus had secretly transferred forty thousand US dollars to Soleil and rented an apartment signed under both their names. The fertility clinic also confirmed there was no record of him donating sperm.
Naomi posted the full truth on social media, and her post was shared over a thousand times. Internet users dug up old chats, where Marcus had bragged in a group message: “Soleil is pregnant with my son. Don’t tell Naomi.” In court, Helen presented an email Marcus had written to Soleil: “Once Naomi fails her next IVF cycle, I will tell her I’m leaving.” The final ruling awarded the house to Naomi, seventy percent of their marital assets, and the full forty‑thousand‑dollar reimbursement. Rain poured outside. She stood in the downpour for a long time, without shedding a single tear.
One year later, she was promoted to Creative Director and started seeing a therapist. At an art gallery, she met Ethan, a photographer. Three years on, she remarried and gave birth to a daughter. Marcus’s company went bankrupt. A DNA test proved the baby was not his — Soleil had been with another man all along.
Naomi ran into Soleil in a park while holding her baby girl. Soleil told her that the other man had also betrayed her. Naomi did not sneer. She simply said, “I’m sorry you went through all of this.”
She pushed the stroller beneath the sunlight. She thought of the girl who once wept on a bathroom floor, and of the woman who finally chose herself. Life does not get better through forgiveness. It gets better the moment you decide to stop paying for other people’s choices.
